Waiting for Totality

Waiting for totality in Huntington, VT, we set up camping chairs facing North and an expansive cloudy horizon. Instead of getting in the car to get beyond the clouds, we stayed and painted in plein air. The wind and sun were raw and the snow radiated cold against our insulated boots. But the light changed ever so slowly, taking on a metallic hue, and shadows lost their soft edges. A day set aside to remember forever. Painting allowed us to slow down and sit and take in the subtle shifts in light and pattern as we waited for the eclipse to take hold. When it became close, we set aside our canvases and lifted our eyes upward (with protective lenses). The spaghetti silver strands danced around the sun above, and the earth took on a foreign ancient wash of light.
